Massasoit Ousamequin Leader of the Wampanaoag Confederacy when the Pilgrims arrived. He tried to create a positive relationship with the colonists.
Pilgrims Another name for the Puritan colonists who founded the Plymouth Colony
Pocahontas/ Matoaka/ Rebecca Rolfe The daughter of Chief Powhatan who supposedly saved John Smith's life. She worked to improve relations between the English and the Powhatans. She was married to John Rolfe.
Puritans an extreme group of Protestants who rejected Elizabeth's religious compromises and founded a colony in America looking for religious freedom.
Separatists an extreme group of Protestants who wanted to form a new church to further reform Christianity
Tisquantum A Native American from the area the Pilgrims landed that greatly helped the Pilgrims in establishing the Plymouth Colony. He had previously been enslaved and lived in Europe so he already spoke English when the colonists arrived.
Wahunsenacawh The leader of the Powhatan Confederacy and father of Pocahontas.
Walter Raleigh The Englishman during Queen Elizabeths' reign who introduced tobacco to England
Hudson River A river in modern day New York where the Pilgrims were supposed to have found their colony.
James River The river in Virginia the English colonists built Jamestown next to.
Jamestown The first settlement built in the Virginia colony and named in honor of King James.
Northwest Passage The fabled passage around North America many early English explorers hoped to find.
Plymouth Colony The colony established in modern-day Massachusetts by Puritans
Provincetown Harbor A harbor in Massachusetts where the Pilgrims spent their first winter
Roanoke Colony An attempted American colony by Queen Elizabeth
Virginia Colony The first successful English Colony founded in America
Werowocomoco The capital of the Powhatan Confederacy
Cash Crop Crops that are grown to be sold for profit, not for survival
Charter Official royal permission to start a new venture, such as a new colony or trading company
The Gunpowder Plot A failed assassination attempt of King James by disgruntled Catholics
House of Burgesses The representative government founded by the Virginia Colony
Indentured Servant A person who is bound to be a servant for a set number of years , often in exchange for passage to America, sometimes s criminal punishment
Joint- Stock Company A private stock company
London Company The joint-stock company that financed Jamestown
Malaria a deadly disease transmitted by mosquitoes that killed many early colonists.
The Mayflower The small ship the pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean in.
