Storage Devices

study guide

TermDefinition
Drive Types of magnetic technology hard disk drive sip drives floppy drive tape drives
hard disk drive earlier drives used the 40 pins IDE/PATA interface; later ones were available with SATA; uses internal 3-½ bay; disks are called platters; actuator arms moves by magnets typical speeds 5,400 7,200 and 10,00 RPM;
floppy disk drives(FDD)- 34 pins, high density double sided capacity is 1.44 megabytes; made of Mylar and plastic. Later ones swerve 3 ½ internal driver bay; previous sizes were 5-¼”and even larger
Zip drives looks like a floppy disk on steroids: typical sizes were 150-200 Megabytes; external drives used the 25-pin parallel cable.(USB wasnt around/ not a thing lol)
tape drives slow data access but low cost for the amount of data stored; good storage and high volume; similar to cassette tape.
Magnetic uses the magnetic time to manage zeros and one's
Optical uses pits and lands to reflect light (from a laser) or not reflect light; pits do not reflect, lands do; continuous spiral-shaped geometry
Flash uses memory chips called NAND gates to hold/store data; no moving parts,

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
