Anatomy The study of the structure of a living organism
Tissue A group of cells that perform a certain function
Molecules Combined atoms that form larger chemical aggregates
Cells The smallest of structure and function in the body
Organ Different kinds of tissues that work together
Element A subtance that cannot be further broken down or decomposed into two or more different subtances
Metabolism All chemical reactions that occur in body cells
Bases Substances that accept hydrogen ions
Acids Substances that release hydrogen ions and donate protons
Octet Rule Refers to the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell (outermost).
Neuron The conducting unit of a nerve tissue
Melanin The substance in your body that determines hair, eye and skin pigmentation.
Anterior In front of
Posterior In back of
Medial Towards the body's midline
Lateral Towards the side of the body or away from its midline
Proximal Toward of nearest the trunk of the body
Distal Away or farthest from the trunk
Superficial Nearest to the surface
Deep Farther away from the body surface
Hydrogen Bonds Form when electrons are equally shared
Epidermis Superficial, thinner layer of the skin made up of keratinized stratified squamos cells
Dermis Deep, thicker layer of the skin made up of fibrous tissue
Surface Skin Coats and protects the skin and is made up of sweat, sebum, microorganisms, and various chemicals
Hypodermis Loose fibrous connective tissue and adipose tissue under the skin
