rotation | The spin of a body on its axis. |
day | The time required for earth to rotate once on its axis. |
revolution | The motion of a body that travels around another body in space; one complete trip along an orbit. |
year | The time required for earth to orbit around the sun one time. |
season | A division of the year that is characterized by recurring weather conditions, and determined both by earth's tilt relative to the sun and the earth's position in its orbit around the sun. |
September equinox | In this position, sunlight shines equally on both poles of the earth. It occurs1/4 of earth's revolution around the sun after the June solstice. |
December solstice | In this position the northern hemisphere is tilted away from the sun and is the shortest day of the year for the northern hemisphere. |
March equinox | In this position, sunlight shines equally on both poles of the earth. It occurs1/4 of earth's revolution around the sun after the December solstice. |
June solstice | In this position the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and is the longest day of the year for the northern hemisphere. |
