Stars and Planets

TermDefinition
Solar System a star and all the planets and other objects that revolve around it
Stars huge balls of very hot gases in space most of which are only visible at night; stars are the LARGEST objects in the solar system
Brightness of a star depends on its distance and the composition of its gases; brighter stars are closest to earth
Planets round bodies made of rocks, metal, ice or gas that revolve around a star
Sun appears to be the largest star because it is the closest of all the stars we see, but the sun is actually only a medium-sized star with medium brightness.
Inner Planets relatively small planets with solid rocky surfaces that are closest to the center of the solar system
Outer Planets relatively large planets made mostly of gas that are farther from the center of the solar system
Differences between stars and planets planets r much smaller than stars, planets do not twinkle but stars seem to twinkle, planets can be seen because they reflect light, stars can be seen because they give off light, planets r made up of a combination of rocks, metals, ice, and gas; stars r ma
Similarities between stars and planets 1. both appear to be lights in the sky 2. both can be viewed through telescopes 3. both appear to move through the sky
astronomer a person who studies planets and stars
telescope instrument used for viewing distant objects, including planets, stars, and galaxies
radio telescope A device used to detect radio waves from objects in space. Since it does not depend on visible light, it can be used during the day when the sun is shining. This is an advantage over other telescopes because it can be used for a longer time each day.
Galileo invented the first telescope which allowed humans to see the four largest moons of Jupiter in the 1600s
stars in the night sky These stars are larger than the sun but appear much smaller because of their vast distances (light years) from earth. The sun is much brighter during the day than these stars.
light year the distance light travels in one year
composition What something is made of
Visible Can be seen
Orbit A circular path
technological advances new inventions and improvements made to tools used to study space

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
