Pathophysiology Is the study of the underlying changes in body physiology( molecular, cellular and organ systems) that result from disease or injury.
Pathology The investigation of structural alterations in cells, tissues, and organs which can help identify the cause of a particular disease
Pathogenesis The pattern of tissue changes associated with the development of disease.
Etiology The study of the cause of a disease
Idiopathic The disease has no identifiable cause
Iatrogenic Diseases that occur as a result of a medical treatment
Nosocomial Diseases that are acquired as a consequence of being in a hospital environment
Diagnosis The naming or identifying a disease
Prognosis The expected outcome of a disease
Acute disease Sudden appearance of signs and symptoms that only last a short time
Chronic disease Develops slowly and the signs and symptoms last a long time
Remission Periods when signs and symptoms disappear or diminish significantly
Exacerbation Periods when the symptoms become worse or more severe
Complication the onset of a disease in a person who is already coping with another existing disease
Sequelae Unwanted outcomes of having a disease or are the result of trauma
Clinical manifestations
Signs Objective alterations that can be observed or measured by another person
Local signs Redness or swelling
Systemic signs Fever
Symptoms subjective experiences reported by the person with the disease
Prodromal period is the time during which a person experiences vague symptoms before the onset of specific signs and symptoms
Insidious symptoms Vague or nonspecific feelings and an awareness that there was a change within the body
Latent period Time during which no symptoms are readily apparent in the affected person but the disease is still present in the body
Epidemiology The study of tracking patterns or disease occurrence and transmission among populations and by geographic areas
Incidence of a disease The number of new cases occurring during a specific time period
Prevalence Number of existing cases within a population during a specific time period
Risk factors or predisposing factors increase the probability that disease will occur but these factors are not the cause of the disease
Precipitating factor A condition or event that does cause a pathologic event or disorder
