Air Mass & Fronts
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Continental Air Mass | Dry (Form over land) |
Maritime Air Mass | Wet (Form over ocean) |
Tropical Air Mass | Warm |
Arctic Air Mass | Colder |
Polar Air Mass | Cold |
Warm Front | Warm air mass hits cold air mass and then rises up. Long periods of extended rainfall then warm air. |
Cold Front | Cold air mass hits warm air mass and forces it up. Short periods of intense rain shortly after the front’s arrival followed by cool, clear weather. |
Occluded Front | A faster moving cold front catches up to a warm front and forces the warm air upward. There is usually precipitation along an occluded front |
Stationary Front | Two air masses meet and stop. The weather will remain the same until some other movement occurs. |
Coriolis Effect | The deflection of air or water caused by Earth’s Rotation |
Cyclone | Low pressure center where winds move inwards & counterclockwise. At the center, air is rising and they are associated with cloudy skies |
Anticyclone | High pressure center where winds move outwards & clockwise. At the center, air is sinking and they are associated with clear skies |
