Chapter 3.3 - Disease and Treatment

TermDefinition
Side Effects Result of drug therapy or other therapy that is unrelated to or an extension of its intended effect. Usually applies to an undesirable effect of treatment.
Contraindication Factor that makes the use of a drug undesirable or dangerous.
Anaphylaxis Extreme allergic reaction that can lead to respiratory distress, circulatory collapse, and death.
Synergy Phenomenon of two drugs acting together to produce an effect greater than either of the drugs alone.
Potentiation Increased potency created by two drugs working together.
Antagonist Substance that interferes with or opposes the action of a drug.
Efficacy Power to produce a specific result effectiveness (Difference between generic and brand name drugs)
Generic Nonproprietary name of a drug which is usually a simplified version of the chemical name and not capitalized.
Tolerance Chronic use of a drug resulting in loss of effectiveness
Withdrawl Results from abrupt cessation or reduction of a drug that has been used regularly.

Liquid Drug Preparations: Emulsion Mixture in which one liquid is dispersed but not dissolved in another liquid
Semisolid Drug Preparations: Cream Semisolid emulsion used topically
Semisolid Drug Preparations: Ointment (ung) Drug in a base that keeps in contact with the skin
Solid Drug Preparations: Capsule (cap) Material in a gelatin container that dissolves easily in the stomach
Solid Drug Preparations: Lozenge Pleasant tasting medicated tablet or disc to be dissolved in the mouth
Solid Drug Preparations: Tablet (tab) Solid dosage form containing a drug in a pure state or mixed with a non-active ingredient and prepared by compression or molding
Solid Drug Preparations: Suppository (supp) Substance mixed and molded with a base that melts easily when inserted into a body cavity
