User Profiles

cnit 242 exam 1

TermDefinition
what is a profile? --environment created specifically for a user -contains things like cookies, desktop, favorites, my documents, start menu, etc. --created for all new users by copying and modifying a default profile -- default can be modified by admin
what is a local profile? --basic type of profile --accounts on a stand-alone computer have a local profile -scoped to that computer, typically stored at "c:\users\username" --user can modify any data in the profile (add/delete files, change app data (ms office dictionary))
what are the problems with local profiles? --data is not shared among clients in the domain --home directory may be available but other utilities are not --bookmarks and dictionaries are managed on each client --user would desire to have same environment no matter the computer being used
what is a mandatory profile? --a read-only profile assigned to account • ensures the user's environment is always the same • multiple users can share one mandatory profile • only managed/modified by admin • for specific task accounts (bank teller, pos) • vertical application
what is a roaming profile? --user's profile stored on a network share • at logon, profile copied from share to client's local profile location • local copy used while logged in • copied back to network share at logoff --allows for consistent environment
what are the possible issues with roaming profiles? • greatly increase logon/off time as entire profile is copied • versioning issues if on multiple devices • copy of profile remains on client after logoff --allows user to login when DC is not available-cached credentials lead to security concern
what is folder redirection? • portions of profile can be redirected-these components are NOT copied at logon/off • gives a way to separate user data from profile data
folder redirection pros & cons advantages: --reduced logon/off times --increases security by eliminating data left on clients disadvantages --user must be connected to network to access redirected contents • issue for laptops • alleviated through offline files
Which of the following is not contained in a user profile? A) Desktop B) Application Settings C) My Documents D) Favorites E) A & B F) All of the above are in a user profile All of the above
An advantage of Folder Redirection is that users can access their files even if they aren't connected to the network. True or False? False: Using folder redirection users cannot access their desktop and my documents when they are not connected to the network
What does a domain that uses only local profiles do? Each user will have a completely separate profile on each computer Logging into a new computer will create a new local profile for the user on that machine
The best way to resolve the issue of profile version differences (such as XP and Vista+) is to: Use roaming profiles Use folder redirection Use offline files Use group policy to enforce compatibility settings folder redirection
Which of the following is/are problematic when using roaming profiles? -login and logout times can be significantly extended -files and settings are left behind on every computer the user has logged into
