Pharmacology (week1)
Term | Definition |
---|---|
pharmacotherapeutics | the use of clinical drugs to prevent and treat diseases; focuses on the principles of drug actions (type of therapeutic effect goals/types) |
pharmacokinetics | the study of what happens to the drug from the time it is put into the body to the time it leaves the body; what the body does to the drug; includes 4 phases |
pharmacodynamics | the study of biochemical and physiologic interactions of drugs at their sites of activity (interactions of receptors, enzymes, and non-selective interactions); what the drug does to the body; the goal is a therapeutic effect |
pathophysiology | the study of a disease process within the body |
pharmacology | the study of how drugs interact with other elements |
assessment | the first step of the nursing process; includes gathering data from a physical examination, medical record, and a patient interview/history |
problem identification | identifying a current, actual problem or the risk for developing a problem related to drug therapy |
planning: outcome identification | related to a pharmacological problem, this is specific to the patient's drug regimen; creating SMART goal(s) |
implementation of interventions | carrying out the plan within your scope and can involve maximizing a therapeutic effect and/or minimizing any adverse effects |
evaluation | measuring the patient's progress and if needing to reassess to identify any barriers to success; must identify reasons behind any treatment failure |
chemical name | precisely describes the drug's atomic and molecular structure |
generic name | nonproprietary name; identifies the drug's active ingredient; consists of 1 name and is lowercase |
trade name | brand or proprietary name |
black box warning | a way of flagging important safety information and indicates a need for extra precautions; the most serious medication warning required by the FDA used when the medication can cause serious undesirable effects compared to the potential benefit |
