Canaan | The land God promised to Abraham's descendants. It covered about the same territory as modern Israel. Its inhabitants were idol-worshipers who sacrificed their own children in cult rituals |
Egypt | The ancient kingdom along the Nile River. During the time of the Patriarchs, Egypt was the wealthiest and most powerful nation on earth. |
Esau | The elder of Isaac and Rebekah's twin sons. The ancestor of the Edomites. He gave up his birthright for a bowl of Jacob's stew. |
Israel | The name given to Jacob after he wrestled with God.Also the name of the nation that descended from him. |
Jacob | The younger of Isaac and Rebekah's twin sons. He fooled his father into giving him the first-born's blessing, becoming Isaac's heir. Through him God renewed the covenant with Abraham's descendants. |
Joseph | Jacob's favorite among his twelve sons. His envious brothers sold him as a slave, but Joseph rose to become Prime Minister of Egypt, where he was ultimately able to save his family from starvation. |
Patriarch | A father who leads a family or tribe. Abraham and his descendants, the founders of Israel, are known as the patriarch. |
Pharaoh | The title of the king of Egypt. |
Rebekah | Wife of Isaac, mother of Jacob and Esau. She plotted to gain Isaac's blessing for Jacob - her favorite. |

Angel | a messenger from God. Angels are pure spirit. In Scripture their appearances are usually terrifying. |
Circumcision | The visible sign of God's covenant with Abraham. Circumcision set the people of God apart from other nations. |
Isaac | Son of Abraham and Sarah. Born when they were very old. Although Isaac was not Abraham's first son, he was the onlt child born of Sarah, Abraham's wife, making Isaac the heir of God's promises. |
Ishmael | Abraham's son by Hagar, Sarah's servant.The founder of the Arab tribes. |
Gomorrah | Along with Sodom, one of the cities of the plain destroyed by God because of wickedness. Lot had settled there, but was warned by angels to flee. |
Ur | A city in the Plain of Shinar, the original home of Abraham. |
Lot | Abraham's nephew. He settled in the prosperous plains, leaving Abraham in the wilderness of the hill country. |
Moriah | The mountains around Jerusalem, where Abraham went to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. |
Sarah | The wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac |
Sarai | the original name of Sarah |
Sodom | Along with Gomorrah, one of the cities of the plain destroyed by God because of wickedness. Lot had settled there, but was warned by angels to flee. |
Aaron | Moses' brother. Acted as his spokesman. Founded the priesthood of Israel. |
Passover | The saving of the first-born children of Israel when the first born of the Egyptians were killed. It is the most important event in Israel's history and remembered with an annual feast. |
Ark of the Covenant | An ornate box that held the tablets of the Law. It represented God's throne on earth. |
Plague | A disaster that affects a large number of people. The 10 plagues in Exodus were signs of God's wrath against the Egyptians, and particular judgments against the Egyptian false gods. |
Dynasty | A series of rulers from the same family |
Exodus | Israel's escape from Egypt. It comes from a Greek word that means "going out" |
Hebrew | The name used by the Egyptians to describe the Israelites and related tribes. The language spoken by the people. |
Idolatry | The worship of man made images as though they were gods |
Manna | The miraculous food that the Israelites ate in the desert. It is a type of Eucharist / Communion. |
Midwife | A woman who assists at childbirth. Hebrew midwives defied Pharaoh's command that all male Hebrew children should be killed. |
Moses | The man God chose to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. He was adopted by Pharaoh's daughter and raised in Pharaoh's court, but fled Egypt after rebelling against the Egyptian taskmasters. |
Sea of Reeds (the Red Sea) | The body of water initially blocking the Israelites' escape from Egypt. It miraculously parted for them, but Pharaoh and his armies were drowned when they pursued. |
Sinai | The mountain where Moses received the Law (the 10 Commandments) from God |
Tabernacle | The tent that served as a meeting place and temple for the Israelites while they wandered in the desert. It was designed as a reflection of the temple of heaven. |
Ten commandments | The fundamental laws given by God of Sinai. They deal with our relationship with God and each other. |
Caleb | One of the spies sent to Canaan. Only he and Joshua had faith in God's promise to deliver the land to Israel. |
Joshua | One of the spies sent to Canaan. Only he and Caleb had faith in God's promise to deliver the land to Israel. He would be Moses' successor as leader of Israel. |
The Golden Calf | An idol made by Aaron when the Israelites demanded it. The people worshipped it as the god that had brought them out of Egypt. |
Levites | Members of the tribe of Levi, who would be the priests for the rest of Israel. |
Constitution | The fundamental law that governs a nation. The law in Deuteronomy would serve as the constitution of the nation of Israel. |
Leviticus | The priestly book containing the laws designed to make Israel a holy people. |
Deuteronomy | Greek for "second law". The name of the book that contains the laws that would become the constitution of the state os Israel. It also restates many of the important laws given earlier, including the Ten commandments. |
Priest | A man dedicated to the service of God. Israel was meant to be a nation of priests, but after the incident of the golden calf, the tribe of Levi was chosen for the priesthood. |
Genocide | The destruction of an entire people. Genocidal warfare was one of the evil consequences of Israel's lack of faith. |
Yhwh | The name of God in Hebrew, usually written as Yahweh or Jehovah and translated as "Lord" in many English Bible versions. (Hebrew had no vowels, only consonants - which is why they wrote it as Yhwh) |
