5.16 Pelvic Girdle
structures of the pelvic girdle

coxal bones | left and right hip bones, comprised of 3 smaller bones |
sacrum | lower portion of vertebral column (attached to L5), roughly triangular shaped, located medially to coxal bones |
pelvic girdle | comprised of the left & right coxal bones and the sacrum |
pelvis | comprised of left & right coxal bones, sacrum and coccyx |
functions of pelvic girdle | bearing weight & mechanical forces of all structures superior to it, protection of pelvic organs, blood cell production, mineral storage, muscle attachment site |
ilium | superior portion of coxal bone, rounded shape superiorly (like a wing), connects posteriorly to sacrum, |
Ischium | forms the most inferior portion of coxal bones, rounded inferiorly, this is the part you sit on |
pubis | forms the most anterior portion of the coxal bone. medially this forms the joint between the left & right coxal bones. |
sacroiliac joint | articulation between sacrum and ilium |
greater sciatic notch | indentation on ilium that allows blood vessels and sciatic nerve to pass from pelvis posteriorly into thigh |
pubic symphysis | anterior articulation between left & right coxal bones at pubis |
obturator foramen | opening formed by the pubis & ischium, allows passage of blood vessels and nerves into anterior thigh |
acetabulum | large socket formed by ilium, ischium and pubis that receives the head of femur |
greater (false) pelvis | measurement of the area medial to the flaring portions of the ilia |
lesser (true) pelvis | measurement of the area medial to the pelvic inlet |
pelvic inlet | area between the greater and lesser pelvis |
pubic arch | area inferior to the pubic symphysis |
subpubic angle | measurement of the angle on the inferior surface of the pubic symphysis |
