Lithotomy Position | Laying on your back, knees bent, with feet raised Women giving birth and pelvic exams |
Fowler Position | On back, head of bed raised about 18 inches, knees elevated Used to ease breathing and drainage |
Prone | Laying Face DOWN |
Supine | Laying Face UP |
Trendelenburg Position | On back with head lowered by tilting bed back at a 45 degree angle Used for pelvic and abdominal surgery. Treatment of shock. |
Sims Position | On left side, right leg drawn up high and forward, left arm along back, and chest forward resting on bed Used for kidney and uterine surgery, colon exams, and enemas |
Knee-Chest Position | On knees, head and upper chest on table, arms crossed above head Used in gynecology and obstetrics and for flushing the intestine |
Jack-Knife Position | Hips are placed over a center break in an OR bed, chest rolls are placed to raise the chest, arms are extended on an angle board, elbows are flexed, palms are down, a pillow is placed under the ankles to decrease pressure. Used as a surgical position |
Decubitus Position | Lying down specifically according to the part of the body resting on a flat surface. Surgical access to the thorax, kidneys, and hips |
Dorsal Recumbent Position | On back with legs bent and separated, feet flat instead of up in the air Obstetrics and gynecology |
Lateral Recumbent Position | On side with one leg flexed. Arm position may vary. Laying on one side of your body. |
