Mixtures, Solutions, Solubility, Chemical Reactions

TermDefinition
mixture two or more substances sharing the same space that can be separated by physical means
heterogeneous mixture a mixture in which you can identify all the parts
homogeneous mixture a mixture that looks the same throughout and you cannot identify the parts
solution a homogeneous mixture in which the parts are completely dissolved and is clear
suspension a heterogeneous mixture in which the parts are heavy enough that they eventually settle to the bottom
colloid a homogeneous mixture that has particles large enough to scatter the light, therefore you cannot see through it.
solubility the ability to dissolve
solute the substance that is being dissolved
solvent the substance that is doing the dissolving
unsaturated a liquid solution that can still hold more solute
saturated a solution that cannot hold anymore solute; it is full
supersatured a solution that is holding more solute than it should be able to
concentrated a solution that is holding a lot of solute, or have very little solvent
dilute a solution that is not holding very much solute, or has a lot of solvent.
soluble able to dissolve
insoluble not able to dissolve
Pure Substance A substance that is not mixed with anything else
Physical Change A change that does not alter the identity of a substance
Chemical Change A change that produces a new substance after the reaction.
Distillation A method to separate liquids based upon different boiling points
Evaporation A simple method used to separate solid solutes from liquid solvents
Filtration A method to separate undissolved solids from liquids
pH a way of measuring how acidic or basic a solution is
Acidic pH a pH of less than 7
Basic pH a pH of more than 7
Neutral pH a pH of exactly 7
Law of Conservation of Mass Matter cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms
reactants the substances that mix to form a reaction
products the new substance that is produced after a chemical reaction

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
