Abdominal cavity | largest hollow space of the body |
Abnormal Lung Sounds Crackles / Rhales Rhonchi Stridor Wheeze | the absence of sound and/or. the presence of "normal" sounds in areas where they are normally not heard |
Alveoli | tiny air sacs at the end of the bronchioles |
Asthma | a chronic (long-term) condition that affects the airways in the lungs, the airways can become inflamed and narrowed at times |
Bronchi | the large air passages that lead from the trachea (windpipe) to the lungs |
Diaphragm | the major muscle of respiration. It is a large, dome-shaped muscle that contracts rhythmically and continually, and most of the time, involuntarily |
Epiglotis | the flap that covers the trachea during swallowing so that food does not enter the lungs |
Expiration | the second phase is called expiration, or exhaling |
Expiratory Reserve Volume (ERV) | the maximal amount of air that can be expired beyond the normal TV expiration |
Intercostal muscles | many different groups of muscles that run between the ribs, and help form and move the chest wall |
Inspiration | inspiration allows air to flow into the lungs |
Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV) | the additional volume of air that can be inspired at the end of a normal or tidal inspiration |
Minute Volume | the amount of gas inhaled or exhaled from a person's lungs in one minute |
Residual Volume | the volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximum forceful expiration |
Peak Flow Meter | a handheld device that measures how well air moves out of your lungs |
Spirometer | an instrument for measuring the air capacity of the lungs |
Thoracic cavity | a hollow space surrounded by the rib cage and the diaphragm that contains the heart, lungs, esophagus, thymus. , sympathetic trunk, and the great vessels |
Tidal Volume (TV) | the amount of air that moves in or out of the lungs with each respiratory cycle |
Trachea | the airway that leads from the larynx (voice box) to the bronchi |
Vital Capacity (VC) | the maximum amount of air you can forcibly exhale from your lungs after fully inhaling |
