Neurons & Neuroglia

Cells that make up Nervous Tissue

QuestionAnswer
astrocyte CNS glia that braces neurons and creates the blood brain barrier
axon the extra long sending process of a neuron
body the bulk part of the neuron that contains the nucleus & nucleolus; it looks like the head of the neuron
CNS the location of the brain & spinal cord; neuroglia here include astrocytes, microglia, oligodendrocytes, & ependymal cells
dendrite the receiving process of a neuron that conveys impulses towards the cell body
ependymal glia that lines the CNS cavities; cilia helps circulate CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
microglia glia that controls waste disposal and acts as the immune system of the CNS
motor neuron cell that conducts messages away from the brain towards the effector organ
myelin sheath an insulative lipid (fat) that surrounds some nerve fibers to allow faster impulse conduction
nerve bundle of axons in PNS
neuroglia also known as "glia," support cells that provide neurons with structure, nutrients, and waste removal; they cannot even transmit impulses; in a microscope image, neuroglia appear to be small dots
neuron cell that transmits electrical impulses
oligodendrocyte CNS neuroglia that creates myelin sheaths to wrap around neuron's axons
PNS the location of nerves; neuroglia here include satellite & schwann cells
satellite cells that protect the neuron's cell body in the PNS
schwann cells that form the myelin sheath on the outside of axons (in both CNS & PNS)
sensory neuron cell that conducts messages towards the brain from a sensory organ

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
