What happened during the Russian civil war? 1) Communist lead revolution and eventually overthrow monarchy 2) both US & GB sent troops to support anti-communists 3) This leads Stalin to resent the US & GB
When was the Second Front controversy? (1941-1944)
What happened during the Second Front controversy? 1) During war, Soviets were struggling to fight Germany on the eastern front 2) Stalin wanted 2nd front to open in Western Europe to ease fighting 3) US & GB delayed opening a second front until June 6, 1944 (D-Day)
What was the effect of the US & GB waiting so long to open the second front? Stalin thinks the US & GB purposely delayed opening the second front so Germany would weaken the SU
When was the Yalta Conference? 1945
What was the Yalta Conference? Meeting between FDR, Churchill, and Stalin to discuss post-war Europe
Why did the Soviet Union want Poland? Poland is a good line of defense for Russia in case Germany decides to attack through Poland again which has already happened twice
What did GB want to happen to Poland? GB wants to restore “London Poles” (democratically elected leaders that fled to London during war)
Why was FDR concerned about what happened to Poland? to gain Polish American votes
What did Stalin do with Poland? Soviet setup communist gov in Poland called “Lublin Poles” w/o asking other countries
What happened during 1939 non-aggression Pact? 1) between SU & G 2) S.U received Polish territory 3) When Germany later attacked through Poland, S.U kept that territory 4) London Poles want territory back 5) SU doesn’t want to give it back bc they claim it was wrongfully taken during WWI
What did the US, GB, and SU all agree should happen to Germany? it should be divided into occupation zones
What did SU want to happen to G? 1) permanently weaken G so they can never attack SU again 2) SU wants $10 billion in reparations, both US & GB dont want as much 3) SU thinks US & GB should also get reparations
What organization did the US want to form at the end of the war? United Nations to preserve peace
How would the UN be divided? The UN will consist of two parts: the General Assembly (all the member countries) & the Security Council (only major powers)
What did the SU want in the UN? SU will join the UN if they get 15 votes for each of their republics & unlimited veto in the security council
What did the US want the SU to do in war against Japan? 1) SU & Japan have a neutrality agreement 2) US still at war w Japan, wants SU to step in 3) SU would have to break the agreement & declare war against Japan 4) SU is weak from fighting G
the SU would be willing to fight Japan if they received something in return such as: 1) Land taken during Russo-Japanese War 2) Could occupy parts of China & help communists in the civil war 3) Allowed to occupy parts of Japan after war is over
What was agreed to happen to Poland at the end of Yalta conference? 1) Stalin agrees to hold free elections at a later date if Lublin Poles can run new Polish gov 2) US wants major 3 powers to supervise elections but Stalin says no 3) Stalin never holds free elections in Poland
Declaration of Liberated Europe Stalin promised free elections in rest of Eastern Europe but never enforced by SU or US
Potsdam Conference (1945) 1) meeting between big 3 to discuss Germany post war 2) Truman was now president
Outcome of Potsdam Conference? 1) Germany divided into 4 zones 2) Soviets can only collect $10 billion reparations from their zone 3) 3 Western zones eventually become West Germany
Outcome of UN? 1) Soviet agrees to 3 votes in General Assembly 2) permanent members of security council can veto proposals but not questions of procedure
Outcome of the War against Japan 1) Soviets agree to enter war 3 months after war in Europe ends in return for pats of Manchuria 2) US drops atomic bomb on Japan 3) The Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb by Gar Alperovitz suggests the U.S dropped the atomic bomb to intimidate SU
