What is the hematologic system? A subset of the cardiovascular system that is made up of blood, blood vessels, and blood-forming tissues such as bone marrow
What are the three steps in the formation of a platelet plug? Platelet activation Platelet aggregation
What is the function of fibrin? Holds the platelet plug in place like a net to form a clot
What is thrombin? A major protein responsible for blood coagulation that works in the clotting cascade and also stimulates platelet activation
What is anemia? A deficiency in the number of red blood cells or hemoglobin, which impairs the blood's ability to carry oxygen to the body's tissues.
What is hemophilia? A hereditary coagulation disorder that results ina decreased ability of the blood to clot normally
What is a deep vein thrombosis (DVT)? A condition characterized by abnormal clotting, usually in leg arteries, in which the leg might appear red, swollen, and painful. A DVT can break apart and lead to other complications, such as a pulmonary embolism
What are three causes of iron-deficiency anemia? Excessive blood loss Low dietary iron intake Malabsorption of iron in the GI tract
What is the action of heparin? Indirectly inhibits thrombin and factor Xa to prevent clotting
What is the action of thrombolytic medications? Converts plasminogen to plasmin to break down clots
