How are systolic and diastolic blood pressures determined? Systolic: Contraction of he ventricles Diastolic: Relaxation of the ventricles
What is the function of an erythrocyte (red blood cell)? Transports oxygen to body tissues and organs
What are the functions of capillaries? Connect arterioles and venules and exchange oxygen from red blood cells with carbon dioxide
What is cardiac output? The amount of blood pumped by the heart throughout the cardiovascular system in one minute.
What is the result of plaque accumulating in a blood vessel? Restricted blood flow and insufficient oxygen being transported tot he tissues
What is atrial fibrillation? An irregular and rapid heartbeat that can cause stroke or heart failure.
What is hemoglobin? An iron-containing protein found in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to body organs and tissues and carries carbon dioxide from the body organs and tissues to the lungs for expiration.
What is the action of atorvastatin in the treatment of hyperlipidemia? Inhibits cholesterol synthesis
What is the action of an ACE inhibitor? Inhibits a step in the production of a potent vasoconstrictor, angiotensin II, causing peripheral vasodilation and reduced blood pressure.
What is the action of a diuretic? Decreases the amount of blood volume the heart has to pump by increasing output of water and salt, to decrease blood pressure.
