Intro to Medical Terminonlogy

TermDefinition
Word Root (WR) foundation of medical word that contains its main meaning
Combining Form (CF) created when a WR is combined with a vowel --> "combining vowel" (usually o, sometimes i or e)
Suffix word element at the end of a word, changes meaning (usually indication of a pathology, condition, symptom, therapeutic, or diagnostic procedure, part of speech)
Prefix word element at the beginning of a word, changes meaning (usually indication of #, time, position, measurement, direction, or negation)
3 steps for defining medical words 1. Define suffix first 2. Define first part of word (WR, CF, prefix) 3. Define middle part of word (WR, CF)
3 rules for building medical words 1. WR links suffix that begins with a vowel 2. CF (root+o) links suffix that begins with consonant 3. CF (root+o) links root to another root to form compound word
