sediment | small piece of rock |
sedimentary rock | a type of rock formed by layers of sediments |
compaction | layers of sediment packed together by natural forces |
cementation | the last step in the sedimentary rock cycle in which the compacted sediments are welded of glued together with minerals from water |

erosion | the movement of sediment by wind, water, and ice |
deposition | the dropping off of sediment by wind, water, and ice |

fossil fuels | sources of energy that are formed over millions of years as heat and pressure from layers of sediment and decayed remains of organisms change into materials such as coal, oil, and natural gas |
sandstone | sedimentary rock formed from grains of sand that are compacted and cemented together |
limestone | sedimentary rock that is composed of calcium carbonate and tiny fossils, shell fragments, and other fossilized debris |
