Maxilla Plural: Maxillae left & right unite to form the upper jawbone articulate with every bone of the face except mandible. forms anterior ¾ of the hard palate
Palatine Bones Form the posterior portion of the hard palate
Zygomatic Bones commonly called cheekbones forms prominences of cheeks, part of the lateral wall and floor of each orbit.
Lacrimal Bones Smallest bones of the face, roughly resemble a fingernail in size & shape. Each one has a groove that serves as a passageway for tears. Lacrima = tear
Nasal Bones forms bony portion of the bridge of the nose
Vomer roughly triangular bone on floor of the nasal cavity Forms inferior part of the nasal septum
Inferior Nasal Concha Plural: Inferior Nasal Conchae Thin, curved bones projecting medially from the lateral walls of the nasal cavity.
Mandible lower jawbone largest, strongest facial bone Articulates with temporal bone to form the only freely moving joint of the skull
Hyoid the only bone in the body that does not articulate with any other bone. suspended by ligaments from temporal bones serves as attachment point for tongue muscles
Alveolar Processes portion of the mandible and maxillae that extends around the teeth forming the tooth sockets.
Mental foramen hole in the mandible that allows the passage of the trigeminal nerve
