Electromagnetism

Physics Final Review

QuestionAnswer
Bar magnets are what type of magnet? Permanent
All magnets are what? Polarized
What is the reason for the attraction and repulsion of magnets? Magnetic field
Every magnet has what? A magnetic field
Where do field lines start and end? North to south
Define domain A group of neighboring atoms that have the magnetic fields of there electrons aligned in the same direction
What do non - magnetic materials domain look like? Random directions
How can you align a magnet's domain? Placing it in a magnetic field or rubbing it with a magnet
How can you unalign a magnet's domain? Dropping it repeatedly or heating it up
Define electromagnetism The relationship between electricity and magnetism
Define solenoid A long coil of wire consisting of many loops
What is the result of a solenoid having a lot of loops? Stronger current or magnetic field
Define electromagnet A coil of wire with many loops that uses an electric current to produce a concentrated magnetic field
How do you strengthen an electromagnet? Increase number of coils, thickness/ size of core, and battery/ voltage
What needs to happen in order for an electromagnetic induction to occur? The wire or magnet needs to be moving
Anytime there is a change in magnetic flux, what is induced? Current
A changing magnetic field induces what? Voltage
Define motor Electrical energy converts to mechanical energy
Define generator Mechanical energy converts to electrical energy
Define transformer Increase or decrease voltage by electromagnetic induction
Define ferromagnetic Metals that aren’t magnets
Current flowing through a wire creates what? A magnetic field around the wire

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
