QuestionAnswer
What is a covalent bond? An intramolecular force between two nonmetals from sharing of valence electrons
What is a polar covalent molecule? A covalently bonded molecule where the electrons are unequally shared between the atoms. This creates electronegativity.
How do hydrogen bonds form? The attraction of the negative and positive poles of the molecule result in intermolecular hydrogen bonds
How do polar substances interact with nonpolar substances? Polar substances and nonpolar substances would form an interface and repel/not mix with one other due to their differing characteristics
Draw a water molecule showing its poles H(δ-)-O(δ+)-H(δ-)
Draw a second H2O in the proper position to form a hydrogen bond O HH O HH
Describe what Adhesion means, explain how the polarity of water contributes to it, and explain how it makes life on earth possible. Adhesion is the attraction via intermolecular forces of H2O and another polar molecule. The polarity of H2O allows for attraction between other polar molecules because they each have positive and negative poles. Allows for water to move up plant roots
Describe what Cohesion means, explain how the polarity of water contributes to it, and explain how it makes life on earth possible. Cohesion is the attraction via intermolecular forces of two H2O molecules due to its polarity. Rainfall is dependent of this property
Describe what High specific heat capacity means, explain how the polarity of water contributes to it, and explain how it makes life on earth possible. High specific heat capacity is the ability of containing a large amount of heat energy from the atmosphere
Describe what High heat of vaporization means, explain how the polarity of water contributes to it, and explain how it makes life on earth possible. High heat of vaporization: ocean, lakes, and rivers sustained in high temperatures due to inability
Describe what Floating in the solid state means, explain how the polarity of water contributes to it, and explain how it makes life on earth possible. Floating in the solid state: Structure of water allows it to float as it expands, enlarging the volume
State the function and empirical formula of glucose Energy storing molecule C6H12O6
State the function and empirical formula of ribose DNA stuctural block C5H10O5
What is a disaccharide? Where are they formed and what seems to be the function of them? Allows for transport of monosaccharides in plant cells to the roots
Describe starch/amylose, state the function, and describe where we find them
Describe cellulose, state the function, and describe where we find them
Describe glycogen, state the function, and describe where we find them Energy storing molecule for animals

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
