Term | Definition |

Autonomous Region | A defined area within a state that has a high degree of self-government and freedom from it's parent state |
Multinational State | A country that contains more than one nation |
Multi-state Nation | A nation that has a state of it's own, but it stretches across boarders of other states |
Nation | A group of people who have things in common; cultural heritage, values, self- determination, etc. |
State | Largest political unit; formal term for a country |
Nation-State | A singular nation of people who fulfill the qualifications of a state |
Semi-autonomous Region | A defined area within a state that has a high degree of self-government and freedom from it's parent state |
Stateless Nation | Nation groups that have no independent states of their own |
Self determination | The right of all people to govern themselves |
Sovereignty | The power of a political unit to rule over it's own affairs |
Antecedent boundary | A boundary drawn before a large population was present |
Consequent boundary | A boundary established to accommodate religious, ethnic, linguistic, or economic differences in response to a political decision to separate groups |
Ethnographic boundary | A boundary drawn to accommodate religious, ethnic, linguistic, or economic differences |
Geometric boundary | A boundary drawn on straight lines; usually adheres to latitude or longitude rather than physical features |
Natural boundary | A boundary that is based on a physical features to separate entities |
Relic boundary | A boundary that no longer exists, but evidence of it still exists on the landscape |
Subsequent boundary | A boundary established to accommodate religious, ethnic, linguistic, or economic differences after groups have settled |
Superimposed boundary | A boundary drawn by outside powers |
Gerrymandering | The drawing of boundaries for political districts by the party or group in power, in order to maintain or extend their advantage |
Devolution | The transfer of political power from the central government to subnational levels of government |
Ethnic cleansing | The force removal of a minority ethnic group from a territory |
Ethnic sepratism | The will of ethnic minority groups for self determination through political separation due to greater allegiance to their ethnic group than the state |
Genocide | Mass, organized killing, in which people are targeted for their race, religion, ethnicity, or nationality |
Irridentism | Movement to unite people who share a national identity but are separated by boundaries |
Decolonization | The process of subject people in colonial territories, gaining independence |
Enclave | Small national groups surrounded by a different national group |
Exclave | When a national group controls a territory but also a cluster surrounded by a different territory |
Territorality | The will to control and influence a specific space claimed by a person or group of people |

Nationalism | Strong feelings of patriotism and loyalty to one's country |
Colonialism | Type of imperialism in which people move into and settle on the land of another country |
