Political Parties

Chapter 8 Parties & Special Interest Groups

QuestionAnswer
Political party People who band together who seek to influence gov by winning elections and holding public office.
Lobbying An attempt by a group to influence public policy by persuading public officials to support their stands on issues.
2-party system A political system dominated by two opposing parties.
Pluralism Idea that political power should be shared between more than one group.
Platform A series of statements on where a party stands on the issues.
Public Policy The course of action the governemnt takes to a achieve a public goal.
Liberal Political basis for Democrats.
Independent Term used to describe someone with no party affiliation.
Conservative Political basis for Republicans.
Right Wing The extreme end of conservatism.
Left Wing The extreme end of liberalism
Interest Group An organization that seeks to influence the making of public policy on a specific issue or cause.
Political Action Committee (PAC) The money arm of an interest group that raises and spends campaign donations in support of specific politicans.
Third Party A temporary challenger to the major parties. In presidential elections, it may affect who wins.
Minor Party One of many small political parties without wide support that offer alternatives to the major parties.
Majority Party Whichever party controls the House and Senate is called this:
