molar mass the mass of one mole of a pure substance is called the molar mass of that substance
mole the amount of a substance that contains as many particles as there are atoms in exactly 12g of carbon-12
molecule a neutral group of atoms that are held together by covalent bonds
scientific notation the method of expressing a quantity as a number multiplied by 10 to the appropriate power
formula unit the simplest collection of atoms from which an ionic compound's formula can be written
molecular mass a compound calculated by adding the masses of the elements present in a mole of the molecule or formula unit that make up a compound
atomic mass the weighted average of the atomic masses of the naturally occurring isotopes of an element
molecular formula a chemical formula that shows the number and kinds of atoms in a molecule but not the arrangement of the atoms
density the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance; often expressed as grams per cubic centimeter for solids and liquids and as grams per liter for gases
formula mass the sum of the average of all atoms represented in the formula of any molecule, formula unit, or ion
