CE 6ab- Separation of Powers / Checks and Balances
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Federalism (federal system) | A system of government in which the national government and state governments share power. |
Legislative | To "legislate" means "to make laws." This branch of government makes the laws. |
Executive | The person who runs the government and sees that the laws are carried out (The President). |
Judicial | Having to do with judges, the law, or the courts. This branch interprets the laws, to decide if they have been broken or are allowed under the Constitution. |
Bicameral | Literally it means "two houses." It refers to a legislature who has two different groups who propose and enact laws. (House of Reps vs. Senate) |
Bureaucracy | A large, complex structure of agencies and officials which are appointed, not elected, which handle the everyday business of an organization |
Budget | A plan for making and spending money |
Separation of Powers | The division of power among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government |
Checks and Balances | A system that allows each branch of government to limit the powers of the other branches in order to prevent abuse of power. |
Veto | "To reject," the Presidents ability to refuse to sign a bill into law. |
Impeach | Officially charge a person who holds a public office with misconduct. |
Override | "To overrule," or pass a law despite a presidential veto. |
Unconstitutional | Not allowed under the Constitution |
Executive Action | Legally binding orders given by the president to federal administrative agencies. |
