Terminology for Pharmacology

Affinity The strength of the attraction of a drug to a receptor
Agonist Binds to a receptor and activates a response
Antagonist Binds to a receptor and blocks or inhibits a response
Anaphylaxis Severe, life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction
Anticholinergic Effects Dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation
Antiemetic Stops nausea and vomiting
Antitussive Stops a cough
Bioavailability Amount of a drug available in the blood stream
Contraindication A disease or condition when a drug should not be used
Disulfiram-like Effect A drug-alcohol interaction that causes nausea, vomiting, flushing, headache, chest pain, and abdominal cramps
Dose Amount of a drug
Drug Any chemical that makes a biological change
Efficacy The ability of a drug to produce it’s intended effect
Emetic Causes vomiting
Erythrocytopenia Deficiency of red blood cells
Extrapyramidal (EPS) effects Parkinson-like symptoms including dyskinesia and tremors
Indication Why a drug is used
Legend Drug Prescription drug
Leukocytopenia Deficiency of white blood cells
Loading Dose A first dose that is higher at the start of treatment to ensure blood concentration is at therapeutic level quickly
Mechanism of action How a drug works
OTC Does not require a prescription
Pharmacy The are and science of producing, preparing, dispensing, reviewing, and monitoring medications
Pharmacology The study of drugs
Pharmacodynamics The drug effect on the body
Pharmacokinetics The movement of a drug through the body and the body’s effect on the drug
Pharmacotherapeutics The study of drugs in treatment of diseases and disorders
Phototoxicity A severe reaction to sunlight induced by a drug
Potency The measure of a drugs ability to produce the intended effect.
Prokinetic Promotes movement
Proprietary Name Brand or Trade name; Owned by a drug company
Receptor Site on a cell membrane where a drug attaches
Restricted Drug A drug sold without a prescription, but limits quantities to be purchased and requires identification of the purchaser
Side Effect Secondary effect of a drug; can be undesirable.
Site of Action Where a drug exerts it’s effect
Superinfection An infection that occurs during or after treatment of another infection or as a result of a suppressed immune system.
Teratogenic Causes birth defects
Therapeutic Effect Intended effect of a drug
Thrombocytopenia Deficiency of platelets
Toxicology The study of the harmful effects of drugs
Vasoconstriction The narrowing of a blood vessel.
Vasodilation The widening of a blood vessel.
