Physics unit 2 vocab

Vocab words for Dr. Thornes class

TermDefinition
Force a push or pull that acts on an object measured in newtons (N)
Motion movement
Weight the force of gravity acting on an object
Net force the overall force acting on an object after all the forces combined
Vector a numerical value in a specific direction, describes a specific amount of force (magnitude) and it's direction
Mass the amount of matter in an object
Inertia the tendecy of an object to resist a change in it's motion. (objects in motion want to stay in motion, objects at rest want to stay at rest)
Acceleration a measurement of how quickly an object is changing speed and direction (velocity) per unit of time
Velocity the speed and direction an object is moving in
Newton's first law of motion An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force
Momentum a characteristic of a moving object that is related to the mass and velocity of the object. Known as the quanitity of motion of an object. P=ma, measured in kgm/s
Newton's second law of motion F=ma
Newton's third law of motion For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Action-Reaction forces Pairs of forces of equal magnitude an opposite direction
Thrust The mechanical device that pushes a rocket or aircraft through the air
Friction a force that opposes the motion of objects that touch as they move past each other

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
