What side of hand do you use for butterflies? Dorsal
Blood donation gauge is usually 16 gauge
Gauges used for routine venipunctures: 18, 21, 22, and 23
Grossly hemolysis could be from using the: Wrong size needle
During blood donation and blood stops flowing you should: Stop, dispose of half bag and get a new bag
You must ask for the pt ______Hx prior to blood donation. Complete
Pt with a HR greater than ______cannot donate blood 100
Random urine tests can be done with out without Fasting
Urine specimen for pregnancy test: Get specimen First thing in the morning
HCG is pregnancy hormone
Clean Catch Urine: Instruction the patient to clean the labia with antiseptic mild soap, then: have them void (pee) in the toilet some before peeing in the cup.
Fasting Glucose test: Patient must fast (no food) for 12 hrs then you’ll test the urine every 1-2 hours
Postprandial test: Have the patient void (pee) before they eat
Postprandial means after eating lunch or dinner
Urine test with the use of medication: The urine is collected 2 hours after the medication is given.
24-hour urine test: The patient will need to void in the toilet a little first, then fill up the entire 3-4 liter container with urine for 24 hours
Drug screen urine temp must be within 90-100 degrees F or 32-37 degrees C
Drug screen urine; chain of custody is important so identify each person who had possession and make sure the case number is on it.
Buccal test means Cheek swab
Throat swabs means swab inflamed area around the tonsils, test for things like strep.
Sputum test: This is done in the morning. Instruction patient nothing to eat or drink (NPO), then have the patient take a deep breath in and spit THICK secretions in a container.
Fecal test tests for: bacterial infections and Parasites. DO NOT mix occult blood or urine in the fecal matter.
For semen test a pt cannot ejaculate for how many days? 2-7
For semen samples, the specimen needs to be brought into the lab within 2 hours at a temp of 36-38 degrees C/ 98.6 degrees F. Do NOT refrigerate and protect from light. It’s photosensitive.
Neonatal testing is done 24-72 hours after birth.
Newborn blood is tested for: Cystic fibrosis, hypothyroid, PKU (phenylketonuria) & galactosemia.
For newborn screening card/blood spot collection: let the blood dry for: 4 hours. If running the same test on multiple babies, DO NOT stack the cards on top of each other. Keep away from heat, make sure the entire circle is full. Filter side of paper.
Heel sticks for are: newborns up to one year
For heel sticks stick the: medial lateral part of the heel.
Lancet depth for babies is 2mm
Maximum level of blood to take from an infant is 1 %
Baby weights 3kg(6lbs) what is max blood draw? 3kg x 100= 300 x 0.1= 3ml
Critical lab results for glucose (normal is 70-100) 130
Critical lab results for thrombin T (normal is 0.02hgmm .3
Critical lab results for WBC (normal is 4.4-11mm) 1.8
Critical lab results for RBC (normal is 4000-11000) less than 500
When testing for trophic level of medication wait 15 minutes before med is given.
If blood clots too fast it means you inverted too fast or not at all
Blood gases, ammonia, and lactic acid all need to be put in ice slurry
For ice slurry: If it’s a HOT summer day, put those tests in a biohazard bag with cold packs in the ice slurry.
