semi fowler's position the head of the bed is elevated approximately 30 to 45 degrees
high fowler's position the head of the bed is elevated approximately 60 to 90 degrees
lateral position patient is lying on their side
prone position patient is lying on the abdomen with head turned to one side
sims position extreme side-lying position; head is turned to one side and corresponding leg is sharply bent
shearing sliding across a surface with resistance
friction layers rubbing together and causing injury to skin
logrolling patient is rolled in one fluid motion so that the head, torso, and legs move as one unit
transfer moving from one place to another
weight bearing a person's ability to stand on one or both legs
transfer belt gait belt; a belt used to assist a weak or unsteady person with standing, walking, or transferring
ambulate to walk
mechanical lift special equipment used to lift and move or lift and weigh a person; also called hydraulic lift
sliding board a plastic or wooden board that is about 2 feet long with a slippery surface. Used for a sitting, lateral transfer.
walker assistive device used for support and steadiness when walking
cane used by people who can bear weight but are weak on one side
crutches used by people who cannot bear weight on one leg
Dangle position when a patient sits on the side of the bed
roller board A lateral transfer device composed of serial rollers covered in heavy plastic fabric.
transfer board board made of hard plastic used to move patients who are unable to stand from the side of the bed to a chair.
sit to stand lift An electrically powered mobile lift used to transfer clients from a seated position to a standing position.
