Yr 10 Forces/Motion
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Motion | A change in an object's position. |
Friction | A force that occurs when two substances rub together. It will oppose (work against) the movement of an object. |
Force | A push or pull. Measured in newtons (N). |
Deceleration | Decrease in speed of an object. |
Balanced Forces | When the forces acting on an object are equal. The speed of the object will stay the same. |
Distance | How far an object has travelled. |
Speed | How fast an object is travelling (calculated as distance travelled / time taken). |
Time | How long a journey takes. |
Acceleration | Increase in speed of an object. |
Stationary | Not moving. |
Mass | The amount of matter or "stuff" in an object. Usually measured in grams or kilograms. |
Gravity | The force of attraction between objects due to their mass. Greatest for massive objects (eg the sun, planets). |
Weight | The force which results from gravity acting on the mass of an object. Measured in newtons (N). |
Newtons | The unit by which forces are measured (symbol N). |
Drag | Friction that occurs when an object moves through air or water. |
Unbalanced Forces | When the forces acting on an object are not equal. This changes the motion of the object. |
