| habitat | the natural home or environment of an animal plant or other organism |
| groundwater | water held underground in soil or in pores and crevices in rock |
| water cycle | the cycle of processes by witch water circulates between the earth's oceans atmosphere and land involving precipitation as rain as snow drainage in streams and rivers and return to the atmosphere by evaporation and transpiration |
| evaporation | the process of turning from liquid into vapor |
| transpiration | the water vapor through the stomata |
| precipitation | the action or process of precipitating a substance from a solution |
| tributary | a river or stream flowing into a larger a longer river or lake |
| watershed | an area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers basins or seas |
| divide | separate or be separated into parts |
| reservoir | a large natural or artificial lake used as a source of water supply |
| eutrophication | excessive richness of nutrients in a late or other body of water frequently due to runoff from the land which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of an animal life from lack of oxygen |
| salinity | the quality or degree of being saline |
| sonar | a system for the detection of objects under water and for measuring the water's depth by emitting sound pulses and detecting or measuring their return after being reflected |

| trench | dig a trench or trenches in the ground |
| continental shelf | the area of seabed around a large landmass where the sea is relatively shallow compared with the open ocean the continental shelf is geologically part of the continental crust |
| abyssal plain | any of the great flat sediment-covered areas of oceans floor |
| mid-ocean ridge | a long seismically active submarine ridge system situated in the middle of an ocean basin and marking the site of the upwelling of magma associated with seafloor spreading an example is the mid-ocean ridge |
| current | belonging to the present time happening or being used or done now |
| coriolis effect | the result of earth's rotation on weather patterns and ocean current |
| climate | the weather conditions prevaliling in an area in general or over a long period |
| El nino | an irregularly recurring flow of unusually warm surface waters from the pacific ocean toward and along the western coast of south |
