Diabetes treatments and drug list

Type 1 diabetes : the individuals body is unable to produce insulin, so they become insulin dependent.
Type 2 diabetes; condition that occurs in individuals who have impaired insulin secretion and are often insulin resistant also known as hypoglycemia
Hypoglycemia deficiency of glucose in the bloodstream.
insulin: a hormone produced in the pancreas that regulates the amount of glucose in the blood, the lack of insulin causes a form of diabetes.
food high in sugar stimulates insulin release lack of food inhibits insulin release
DRUG FACT; some drugs will have a XL or ER behind them to show the pill is formulated so that the drug is released slowly over time. advantage of taking pills less often include fewer side effects, and levels stay more consistent in the body.
Sulfonylureas promote the release of insulin from the pancreas; lowers blood glucose levels take 30mins ac (before meals)

GLITAZONES increase insulin sensitivity of the body cells and reduce the production of glucose by the liver. contraindicated in type 1 diabetic patients. take with or will out food but take every day.

Glucovance ( brand) TABLET take before the first meal of the day glyburide & metformin ( generic)
injectable hypoglycemic agents rapid , long, intermediate
Rapid acting begin to work about 15 minutes after injection peaks in about 1 hour and continues to work for about 2 to 4 hours
intermediate acting generally reaches the blood stream about 2 to 4 hours after injection, peaks 4 to 12 hours later and is effective for about 12 to 18 hours.
long acting reaches the bloodstream several hours after injection and tend to lower glucose levels fairly evenly over a 24 hour period
