Chapter 5: Bill of Rights & Other Rights-Based Amendments

Self-Incrimination The right to not have to say anything that would link yourself to a crime.
Slander Falsehoods and lies that are said verbally that hurt someone's reputation.
Symbolic Speech Non-verbal means of conveying information.
Capital Punishment The death penalty.
Double Jeopardy No one can be tried twice for the same crime.
Civil Rights Amendments and acts of Congress thaat address fairness and equality for all citizens.
Corporal Punishment Physical punishment meant to cause pain.
1st Amendment Freedoms of speech, religion, press, assembly, & petition.
2nd Amendment Right to own firearms.
3rd Amendment You cannot be forced to board soldiers in your home.
4th Amendment Rights to privacy from the government.
5th Amendment Rights that kick in after arrest.
6th Amendment General criminal trial rights
7th Amendment Right to a jury trial in a civil case.
8th Amendment Right to be free from cruel or unusual punishment.
9th Amendment People have other rights besides the BOR.
10th Amendment States have the right to make laws on things the constitution does not cover.
13-15th Amendments Banned slavery, defined citizenship, & prohibits denying voting rights because of race.
17th Amendment Citizens have the right to directly elect their U.S. senators.
19th Amendment Prohibits denying the right to vote based on gender.
26th Amendment Granted the right to vote to 18 year olds.
Eminent Domain Right of Government to buy someone's land for the good of the public, even if the owner does not want to sell.
