BJU - Space and Earth Science - Chapter 9 (4th edition)

TermDefinition
Acid Test A method for identifying certain minerals by noting the presence or absence of effervescence of a gas when a mineral is exposed to dilute acids.
carbonate A class of minerals that contain the carbonate ion, which consists of a carbon atom and three oxygen atoms bonded together. Most carbonates release bubbles of carbon dioxide gas when exposed to dilute hydrochloric acid.
Cleavage A property of certain minerals that allows them to split easily along certain preferred planes.
compound mineral A mineral made of a chemical compound. Most occur in chemically similar forms that can be grouped into mineral families.
fracture The characteristic manner in which a mineral breaks when it does not exhibit cleavage.
halide A mineral salt compound. Halides include the mineral halite, which is chemically the same as table salt.
hardness In mineralogy, a mineral's ability to scratch and to resist scratching that relates to the strength of the crystal structure. It is rated on the Mohs hardness scale and is a property used to identify minerals.
luster An identifying property of some minerals. It refers to the quality and intensity of light reflected from the mineral's surface.
mineral A naturally occurring, homogeneous crystalline, inorganic solid.
mineralogist A chemical geologist who mainly identifies, classifies, and analyzes minerals.
Mohs scale A scale from 1 to 10 for classifying minerals according to their relative hardness.
native mineral A mineral that contains only one kind of atom and is therefore a pure element.
ore Rock containing one or more minerals that are the source of elements or compounds important to industry or agriculture.
oxide A nonsilicate mineral composed of oxygen and some other element, usually a metal.
silicate A class of minerals that contains mainly silicon and oxygen along with minor amounts of other elements. Quartz and feldspars, both silicates, are the most common minerals in the crust.
specific gravity A ratio of the mass of a mineral to that of an equal volume of water.
streak A oclor test used to identify a mineral. The test involves creating a streak of the mineral's powder by rubbing it on a ceramic plate.
sulfide A mineral composed of one or more metal elements and sulfur. Sulfide ores are important sources of metals.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
