N370-03: Renal

Labs & Diagnosis pt. 1

Levels/OrderInterpretation/Indication
60 or higher Normal GFR range.
Below 60 Indicates kidney disease.
Below 15 Indicates kidney failure.
0.5-1.5 Normal creatinine level.
Creatinine _____ is measured in the BLOOD; a byproduct of MUSCLE BREAKDOWN
Increased We expect (decreased or increased) creatinine in the blood when kidneys are not adequately filtering out wastes.
Creatinine clearance ______ measures the creatinine in the URINE within a 24 hour period; this is the creatinine that was cleared from the body.
Decreased We expect (decreased or increased) creatinine clearance when less creatinine is effectively filtered out.
11-20 Normal creatinine clearance.
1.010 (diluted)-1.030 (concentrated) Normal urine specific gravity levels.
7.35-7.45 Normal pH level.
22-26 Normal bicarbonate (HCO3) level.
35-45 Normal paCO2 level.
80-100 Normal PaO2 level.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) ______ is measured in the BLOOD; the byproduct of PROTEIN BREAKDOWN (highly affected by hemodilution or hemoconcentration - "HSB")
8-25 Normal BUN level.
True T or F: BUN is elevated during hemoconcentration/FVD -> hepatic/renal impairment, dehydration, high protein diet, infection, steroid use, GI bleed
False; hemodilution/FVO T or F: BUN is decreased during hemoconcentration/FVD -> malnutrition, fluid volume excess, severe hepatic damage (dec clot factors -> thinner blood)
Increased Creatinine is (increased/decreased) ONLY w/ renal impairment.
Decreased Creatinine is (increased/decreased) with reduced muscle mass/muscle breakdown.
10:1 to 20:1 Normal BUN to Cr ratio.
Increased (Increased/Decreased) ratio means FVD or hypoperfusion.
Decreased (Increased/Decreased) ratio means FVO or malnutrition.
Increase (Increase/Decrease) in BOTH means renal impairment.
True T or F: If pt has CHRONIC renal failure managed on dialysis, normal values for them are going to be far from the usual normal -> consult with med team for the PATIENT'S NORMALS.
OK *Know urinalysis findings*
T Potassium and Calcium affect the heart's __ wave.
Peaked (hyper - up high) Hyperkalemia will cause (peaked/flat) T wave. *Inversed with hyperkalemia*
Prolonged (hypo - slow - takes so long to get there); chvostek's and trousseau's signs Hypocalcemia will cause (prolonged/fast) QT interval. *Inversed with hypercalcemia*; expect to see positive _____ .

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
