Brain Anatomy

TermDefinition
Occipital Lobe Location: Back of the head Function: Visual perception, including color, form and motion
Cerebellum Location: Above and behind where your spinal cord connects to your brain itself Function: Helps coordinate and regulate a wide range of functions and processes in both your brain and body
Brain Stem Location: Back of your skull Function: Regulating most of the body's automatic functions that are essential for life
Frontal Lobe Location: Behind the forehead Function: Voluntary movement, expressive language and for managing higher level executive functions
Temporal Lobe Location: Behind the ears Function: Processing auditory information and with the encoding of memory
Parietal Lobe Location: Near the back and top of the head Function: Vital for sensory perception and integration, including the management of taste, hearing, sight, touch, and smell
Wernicke's Area Location: Middle of the left hemisphere Function: Language comprehension, specifically the comprehension of speech sounds, and is also considered to be the receptive language centre of the brain
Broca's Area Location: Inferior frontal gyrus Function: Key component of a complex speech network
Sensory Cortex Location: Parietal lobe Function: Receiving and processing sensory information from across the body, such as touch, temperature, and pain
Motor Cortex Location: Medial surface Function: Generate signals to direct the movement of the body
Spinal Cord Location: Spinal column Function: Send motor commands from the brain to the body, send sensory information from the body to the brain, and coordinate reflexes.
Gyrus Location: Cerebral Cortex Function: Increase the surface area of the cerebral cortex and form brain divisions
Sulcus Location: Cerebral Cortex Function: Increase the surface area of the cerebral cortex and form brain divisions.
Amygdala Location: Medial temporal lobe Function: Processing fearful and threatening stimuli
Hypothalamus Location: Pituitary gland and below the third ventricle Function: Keep your body in a stable state called homeostasis
Olfactory Bulbs Location: The forebrain Function: Processing of olfactory information
Limbic System Location: Underneath the cerebral cortex and above the brainstem Function: Feeding, reproduction and caring for our young, and fight or flight responses
Hippocampus Location: Temporal lobe Function: Learning and memory
Corpus Callosum Location: Cerebrum Function: Ensures both sides of the brain can communicate and send signals to each other
Pineal Gland Location: Slightly under the brain, practically being hidden Function: To receive information about the state of the light-dark cycle from the environment and convey this information to produce and secrete the hormone melatonin
Pituitary Gland Location: The base Function: Growth and sexual/reproductive development and function. Glands (thyroid gland, adrenal glands, and gonads) Organs (kidneys, uterus, and breasts)
Thalamus Location: Near the center Function: Your body's information relay station
Pons Location: Near the bottom of your skull Function: Handles unconscious processes and jobs, such as your sleep-wake cycle and breathing
Medulla Location: bottom most part Function: Helps control vital processes like your heartbeat, breathing and blood pressure.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
