Chem Ch 12 Exam

TermDefinition
A Bond A force that holds groups of two or more atoms together
Ionic bond A bond resulting from closely packed, oppositely charged ions
Covalent bond Where electrons are shared between both nuclei
Polar bond Bonds that lie in between covalent and ionic bonds
Electronegativity The relative ability of an atom in a molecule to attract shared electrons to itself.
The Polarity of a bond The larger the difference, the more polar (ionic) the bond
Dipole moments A molecule that has a center of negative and a center of positive charge is said to have a dipole moment
Lewis Structures A way that chemists represent a molecule's valence electron arrangement
Hydrogen and Helium follow the Duet Rule: They only need and want two electrons in their valence shells
All other atoms generally follow the Octet Rule: They want 8 electrons in their valence shells -3,-2,-1,0 elements can have more than 8 electrons
Boron and Beryllium can have less than 8 electrons
Formal Charge the difference between the number of valence electrons on the free atom and the number of valence electrons assigned to the atoms in the molecule Atoms in molecules try to achieve formal charges as close to zero as possible
Bond order = Bond order = # of bonding pairs in the molecule / # bonding groups

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
