Term | Definition |
---|---|
Chemistry | Study of properties and changes in matter |
Non-polar covalent | Bond type when atoms share electrons equally |
Electronegativity | Scale that describes ability to attract electrons |
Polar Covalent | Bond type when atoms share electrons unequally |
Element | Substances made of only one type of atom |
Matter | Anything that has mass and occupies space |
Nucleus | Dense central portion of an atom |
Diatomic Element | Have No Fear Of Ice Cold Beer; Hydrogen, nitrogen, fluorine, oxygen, iodine, chlorine, bromine |
Isomers | Basically lookalike |
Bond | Has two hydrogens |
Subatomic scale | The domain of physical size that encompasses objects smaller than an atom |
Ionic | Metals + nonmetal Attracted to each other bc of opposite charges |
Covalent | Metals + Metals |
Ion | when an atom changes the number of electrons it has, the new particle is called |
Compound | Cannot be separated, always has a constant composition |
Mixture | Mix of different substances that can be separated |
Cations | Positive charge |
Anion | Negatively charged |
Dipole-Dipole | Attraction between polar molecules |
Hydrogen Bonding | Only occurs between molecules with H attached to, ONF |
Dispersion (London) Forces | Nonpolar molecules (weakest) |
