Energy

TermDefinition
energy the ability to do work and is measured in joules (j).
mechanical energy the sum of an object's kinetic and potential energy.
sound energy a type of kinetic energy that results from the vibration of particles.
electromagnetic energy transmitted through space in the form of waves (does not require matter).
chemical energy the stored energy in the chemical bonds of chemical compounds.
thermal energy is the energy an object has due to the motion of its molecules caused by friction.
electrical energy the energy of moving electrons.
nuclear energy energy that results from the breaking apart or joining of an atom's nuclei.
energy transformation takes place when energy changes from one form to another.
energy transfer the movement of energy from one object or system to another.
law of conservation of energy energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can change and/or move.
gravitational energy is the energy an object possesses due to its position in a gravitational field and is directly related to an object's height or elevation above a reference point.
magnetic energy is the energy associated with the arrangement of magnetic materials in a magnetic field
potential energy is the stored energy that an object has due to its shape, position, or chemical composition.
elastic energy is the energy stored in an elastic object when it is stretched or compressed.
kinetic energy is energy that an object has due to motion
