TermDefinition
complex fraction a fraction where the numerator is a fraction, the denominator is a fraction, or both the numerator and the denominator are fractions.
integer a whole number including positive and negative numbers, a number that is not a fraction
improper fraction A fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator
numerator the part of a fraction that is above the line and signifies the number to be divided by the denominator
demoninator the part of a fraction that is below the line and is the divisor
divisor a number by which another number is to be divided.
quotient a result obtained by dividing one quantity by another.
product a result obtained by multiplying one quantity by another.
additive inverse the number you add to another number to get zero.
additive inverse property states that when a number is added to its opposite sign, the sum is zero
opposites two numbers that are the same distance from zero but on opposite sides of zero.
absolute value the distance a number is from zero on a number line
distributive property a property of multiplication that states: multiplying the sum of two or more numbers by a number will give the same result as multiplying each number individually by the number and then adding the products together. a(b+c) = ab + ac
multiplicative identity also called the reciprocal, when the numerator and denominator are switched
multiplicative identity property states that any number multiplied by its reciprocal equals 1 (one).
multiplicative property of zero states that any number multiplied by zero equals zero.
order of operations the order in which you calculate numbers: PEMDAS (parenesis, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract)
