Book Genres Vocab

TermDefinition
Historical Fiction Fiction that takes place in a different historical time period, includes historically accurate details and facts, and could actually be true.
Realistic Fiction Fiction that takes place in contemporary or present time and could be true.
Mystery This fiction genre focuses on an event that has suspense or a crime that has taken place. There are a series of clues that lead the reader into solving the crime. Often, there will be a detective or wise person and suspects involved to determine "Whodunit?"
Science Fiction This genre is fiction and includes science and technology. This may include space exploration, chemistry and physics with a blend of futuristic societies.
Dystopian This genre is fiction and has an imaginary society that is dehumanizing or limits the rights of citizens. It features a society in decline or ruin. The characters battle a ruined environment, technological control, and strict or oppressive government control.
Traditional Literature This genre consists of fairy tales, legends, tall tales, and fables from throughout the world. Most have started as oral traditions passed down from generation to generation. Eventually these stories were written and shared.
Drama This genre includes written dialogue and stage action. The stories can be fiction or non-fiction that were written for theatrical performance.
Biography This genre is non-fiction. It traces the important events of someone's life story, but is written by someone other than the person being featured.
Autobiography This genre is non-fiction. It shares the important events of someone's life and is written by that person.
Memoir This genre is nonfiction. It is a narrative written from the author's view. It focuses on a specific part of a person's life.
