Adrenerg & Cholinerg

Sympathetic / Parasympathetic Nervous System

TermDefinition
Definition of Adrenergic Drugs Fight or flight / Sympathetic Nervous System ---> stimulate Sympathetic Nerves and send more blood to vital organs needed to fight or run - primarily impact cardiac, circulator, and respiratory systems
Adrenergic Drug Actions - Mimics the Sympathetic Nervous System (all of the actions that would happen during a fight or flight response)
Adrenergic Selective Drugs - Adrenergic nerves have either alpha or beta receptors - Selective: can act on alpha or beta but not both - Nonselective: acts on both alpha and beta (do not have a choice)
Adrenergic Receptors (Alpha) - Alpha 1: vasoconstriction peripheral blood vessels - Alpha 2: presynaptic neuron: regulates release of neurotransmitters and decreases tone, motility, and secretions of GI tract
Adrenergic Receptors (Beta) - Beta 1: myocardium: increased heart rate, increased force of myocardial contraction - Beta 2: vasodilation of peripheral blood vessels and bronchodilation
Adrenergic Uses - Shock - Respiratory distress - Allergic reaction - Heart block - Hypotension
Adrenergic Prototypes - Norepinephrine / Levophed - Dopamine - Epinephrine / Epi pen
Definition Adrenergic Blocking Drugs Block effects of fight or flight response Purpose: block transmission of Norepinephrine
Adrenergic Blocking Drug Classes - Alpha Adrenergic Blocking: Alpha Blockers (causes vasodilation) - Beta Adrenergic Blocking: Beta Blockers (decrease HR, dilate blood vessels) - Alpha/Beta Adrenergic Blocking: Block Alpha and Beta receptors and peripheral vasodilation
Alpha Blockers ADRs - Orthostatic hypotension - Hypotension - Tachycardia - Cardiac arrythmias
Alpha Blocker Prototype Phentolamine
Beta Blockers ADRs - Hypotension - Orthostatic hypotension - Bradycardia - Bronchospasm
***Should you give a Beta Blocker to someone with asthma? NO
Beta Blocker Prototype Metoprolol / Lopressor
Alpha/Beta Blocker ADRs - Hypotension - Bradycardia - Skin rash - Dyspnea (shortness of breath)
Alpha/Beta Blocker Prototype - Carvedilol / Coreg - Labetalol
Cholinergic Pathway ACETYLCHOLINE
Cholinergic Agonist - Can treat myasthenia gravis (nerve/muscle disorder) - Treats dry mouth, urinary retention, and every now and then glaucoma - Can cause: increased GI motility, increased bladder contractions, increase in saliva/sweating, difficulty breathing in asthma
Cholinergic Blocking - Treats asthma, COPD, urinary retention, gastroparesis, bladder spasm, hyperhydrosis - Can cause: dry mouth, constipation, visual changes, decreased sweating, somnolence - Do not give to someone with heart failure
Cholinergic Agonist & Blocking Can equal eachother out - so you would not take both

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
