DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) written by a doctor when the patient has indicated a desire to be allowed to die if they stop breathing
patient advocate one who speaks for and protects the rights of a patient
negligence failing to meet the standard of care; failing to do something reasonable
prudent sensible and careful
malpractice negligence by a professional person
assault threat to harm another person or threaten to touch another person without their permission
battery actual physical contact that has been refused or that has been carried out against the persons will
defamation when a person makes remarks about another person that is not true and the remarks damages that person's reputation
two types of defamation slander (oral) and libel (written)
invasion of privacy violation of the confidential and privileged nature of a professional relationship
NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) confidentiality agreement
false imprisonment preventing a person from leaving or restricting their movements in the facility
protective devices (mechanical) locks, rails, belts, or garments that prevent a person from getting out of a room, bed, or chair
protective devices (chemical) drugs such as sedatives or tranquilizer that sedate the patient so they are unable to move
nursing competence possessing the skill, knowledge, and experience necessary to provide safe nursing care
liability insurance Protects the livelihood and assets of the nurse if the nurse gets sued
incident report often used to document what happened, the facts about the incident and who was involved or witnessed it
ethics rules of conduct that have been agreed to by a particular group
euthanasia ending another persons life, with or without person's consent, to end actual or potential suffering
whistle-blowing reporting illegal or unethical actions
consent permission given by the patient or their legal representative to perform surgery
civil law guarantees individual rights
criminal law a wrong against society
competence the ability to do something successfully or effectively
litigation lawsuit; legal process to prove facts of a dispute

Good Samaritan law Protects a health care professional from liability if they stop to provide aid in an emergency
Patients rights Seeks to preserve patients dignity, privacy, freedom of movement and information needs
National patient safety goals Provides evidence and expert based solutions to problem areas in terms of patient safety
The medical record A legal document that includes records of all assessments, tests, and care provided
QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) Focuses on competency needed to improve quality of care and work environment
HIPAA Law that protects personal health information
Informed consent • indicates patients participation in decision making • person signing must know what the consent allows and be able to make knowledgeable decision • physician informs patient on procedure being done
