Weathering | The breakdown of rock material into smaller pieces through physical or chemical processes |
Mechanical Weathering | The physical breakdown of rock into smaller pieces through processes like ice wedging, animal activity, plant growth, abrasion |
Chemical Weathering | The breakdown of rock through chemical changes from water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, plant root tips, acid rain. |
Deposition | When weathered material is dropped off or settles in a new location. |
Soil | Material that is formed from broken down pieces of rock mixed with organic and inorganic material for which plant can grow |
Landslides | The movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope |
Mass Wasting | The movement of rock and soil down slope due to the influence of gravity |
Talus | Pieces of rock debris that fall and form at the base of a cliff |
Erosion | When weathered material is MOVED from location to another by means of wind, water or ice. |
Striations | Long grooves or scratches on a surface of rock left behind from the movement of a glacier |
Glaciers | Large mass of ice formed in cold regions from compacted snow that move slowly across land. |
Geographic Features | The details of the Earth's surface such as mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes |
Formations | Rock that stands out enough in appearance that one can tell it apart from other rock layers |
Permeable | A series of tiny connected air spaces. The larger the spaces; more material can pass through. |
Surface Area | All the space on the outside of an object. |
Sediment | Broken down pieces of rock material that can be carried from one place to another |
