ions and ionic compounds
Term | Definition |
---|---|
ionization | The process of an atom gaining or losing electrons in order to fill their valence |
ion | An atom or group of atoms that carries a postive or negative electrical charges |
cation | A positvely charged ion and form when atoms lose electrons. They are mostly metals. They lose electrons they become positively charged ions. |
anion | A negatively charged ion and form when atoms gain electrons. They are mostly non-metals. They gains electrons they become negatively charged ions. |
Crystal lattice | The three-dimesional pattern of alternating positive and negative ions in an ionic compound |
Formula Unit | The smallest repeating unit within a crystal lattice. |
Ionic bonding | A chemical bond between oppostively charged ions |
