Unit3bonding

TermDefinition
Electron configuration The arrangement of electrons in orbitals around an atomic nucleus.
Covalent bond The mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms.
ionic bond Ionic bonds form when two or more ions come together and are held together by charge differences.
Lewis dot structure (electron-dot notation) A representation of the valence electrons of an atom that uses dots around the symbol of the element.
Octet rule The tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell
metallic bond The chemical bonding that holds the atoms of a metal together
conductivity Material that is able to conduct electricity
polar Having electrical or magnetic polarity.
nonpolar A nonpolar molecule is one whose charge distribution is spherically symmetric when averaged over time
bent A kind of molecular geometry in which the central atom has two lone pairs of electrons and is associated with two bond pairs
tetrahedral Molecules and polyatomic ions that have one atom in center and four atoms at the corners of a tetrahedron
trigonal planar A central atom connected to three atoms arranged in a triangular pattern around the central atom.
linar A molecule or polymer with a single backbone
valence electrons The outermost electron(s) in the shell
formula unit the empirical formula of any ionic or covalent network solid compound used as an independent entity for stoichiometric calculations
Polyatomic ion an ion composed of two or more atoms

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
