Unit 3

QuestionAnswer
Electron configuration the arrangement of electrons in an atom
Covalent bond a bond formed when atoms share one or ore pairs of electrons
ionic bond a force that attracts electrons from one atom to another, which transforms a neutral atom into an ion
ion an atom, radical, or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons and has a negative or positive charge
Lewis dot structure a structural formula in which electrons are represented by dots;dot pairs or dashes between two atomic symbols represent pairs in covalent bonds
Octet rule an atom will be most stable when surrounded by 8 electrons in the valence shell
Metallic bond a bond formed by the attraction between positively charge metal ions and the electrons around them
conductivity material that is able to conduct electricity
polar describe a molecule in which the positive an negative charges are separated
nonpolar a covalent bond in which the bonding electrons are equally attracted to both bonded atoms
bent 2 atoms bond to central atom, lone pairs of 1 electron
tetrahedral 4 atoms bond to central atom, lone pairs of 0 electrons
trigonal planar 3 atoms bond to central atom, lone pairs of 0 electrons
Linar 2 atoms bond to central atoms, Lone pairs of 0 electrons
Valence electron an electron that is found in the outermost shell of an atom and that determines the atoms chemical properties
formula unit the simplest collection of atoms from which an ionic compounds formula can be written
polyatomic ion an ion made of two or more atoms
VSEPR theory a theory that predict some molecular shapes based on the idea that pairs of valence electrons surrounding an atom repel each other

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
